Five Linen Fabric Facts – Natural Fabric Store – Natalie Canning Interiors

Natural linen fabric is something we all associate with quality clothing, curtains and bedding but I wanted to share five facts that you may not know about this wonderfully versatile natural fabric.

1.  Natural fabric linen is created from the fibres of the beautiful flax plant.

The dainty flax plant is the secret behind the natural fabric linen.

The fibres from the flax plant are used to create fine linen fabric.

2.  The botanical name of the flax plant is Linum usitatissimum and the English word, linen, is derived from the generic name, linum.

3.  Linen was used by the Egyptians for mummification.

4.  Linen fabric resists dirt and stains.

5.  Linen is used by bakers for holding dough into shape before baking.

This type of linen cloth is called a couche and is heavily floured to ensure a non-stick surface to hold the dough.

The linen couche is folded into ridges to prevent the dough from spreading.

At Natalie Canning Interiors we have an extensive range of natural linen fabrics all ideal for creating exquisite curtains, roman blinds and most other soft furnishings.  Linen curtain fabric is the perfect choice for timeless and relaxed country schemes.

Rewarding Testimonial!

Thank you Liz for taking the time to write this testimonial!

“A superb service from the beginning to end.  The colours, textures and designs I had to choose from was plentiful with useful advice to help me make the right decisions, not only just with choosing the fabric but also with the styling and hanging so they looked great whether they were closed or open.  There was no fine detail missed, from the weight of the lining to the colouring of the poles, and finally making sure the pattern was continued with the matching blinds.  It was this kind of attention to detail that make my curtains look “a cut above” any other curtains I’ve hung before.  My poles, curtains and blinds were all hung with efficiency and care with the reassurance that it was carried out properly and professionally.”

Linen Roman Blinds & Cartridge Pleat Curtains

We had already made several hand sewn curtains and roman blinds for this beautiful country home but for this room our customer wanted something different.

BRIEF:
This was a place for the man of the house to relax so needed to be masculine but warm.  No duckegg or white allowed and no fuss or frill!

THE SOFT FURNISHINGS SOLUTION:
This range from Clarke & Clarke provided a striking choice of linen mix fabrics allowing us to create a room full of rich colours and texture.  Bold stripes for the hand sewn roman blinds, a dip dye effect at the bottom of the long cartridge pleat curtains and some perfectly co-ordinating cushions.

These colours were a brave step for my normally very conservative customer but we (and the man of the house) were very pleased with the end result.

The Amazing Beeswax Story!

Made by the Forge create the most beautiful, bespoke iron poles and they use real beeswax to preserve and protect the iron.
Juliet Fishenden (from Made by the Forge) shares with us her knowledge on beeswax and how it is made:
“Historically Beeswax has been used for thousands of years and has been found in the tombs of ancient Egypt, wrecked Viking ships and Roman ruins.
SONY DSC
Beeswax is made by the worker bees by secreting wax from 8 special glands on the underside of their abdomens. The wax cools and solidifies and the bee collects the wax with her legs and manipulates and shapes it into the hexagon cells that make up the honeycomb. The beekeeper collects the honeycomb which then goes through a number of stages, honey extracted, comb heated, cooled and then moulded into the blocks we use.

It is a phenomenal natural miracle and incredible how such a tiny animal can make such an amazing product which has a multitude of uses.
Honey Bee
It was discovered to be one of the first plastics ever used and traditionally applied to protect wrought iron before modern paint was invented. It was found to have the best coating ability to preserve and protect the iron. It is still the best natural way of finishing iron because it covers the iron effortlessly with a shimmery film leaving the grain beautifully raw and intact.
